QuickTime 3.0, developed by Apple Inc, brings you the tools to work with media files in an enhanced way. It is an efficient program designed to create and edit video files.
With its user-friendly interface, it allows both beginners and experts to free their creative spirit while creating and editing movies.
QuickTime runs both on Mac and Windows platforms, and provides useful tools for the creation and editing of several image formats.
It supports GIF, JPEG, TIFF and other file formats, and video output components.
Quicktime also supports Photoshop files, either existent or newly created; however, it does not allow re-opening the files once opened and edited by Photoshop.

Other features of QuickTime 3.0 include Sorenson Video codec for advanced video compression, QDesign Music codec for substantial audio compression and improved playback of MIDI music files. The upside of the application is that it supports AVI and exports files in BMP, JPEG, PICT, Photoshop and QuickTime formats.

The program also adds video effects that can be applied to video tracks in real time by just a few mouse clicks.

QuickTime is distributed free of charge. However, the included QuickTime Player is limited to only basic playback operations.

Advantages:

  • Distributed free of charge
  • Available for Classic Mac OS, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems

Disadvantages:

  • The included QuickTime Player is limited to only the most basic playback operations unless the user purchases a QuickTime Pro license key.

I've had problems with Quicktime throughout its long history. I always install it hoping it works, and unfortunately often it
doesn't.

Never liked this software.
Apple still can't get simple Windows interface right with this one.
When exiting, it keeps asking to save the file even if it isn't modified.
When the MessageBox comes up with Yes/No, you have to physically click the button as there is no default set so you can use the
enter key.
Also there are no accelerator keys so you can press "y" or "n"

I'm off to look at VLC.
